Grounded and Free™
Tools for Healing, Growth, Connection, and Intentional Living
Grounded and Free™ is a growing collection of therapeutic resources, books, workbooks, and structured curricula developed by Dr. Latonia Laffitte and Dr. M. Nickleson Battle, Jr. of The Bridges Wellness Group.
At its core, Grounded and Free is built around a simple idea: meaningful change requires both grounding and freedom.
Being grounded means developing the awareness, stability, skills, and support needed to understand ourselves and navigate life with intention. Being free means moving beyond patterns, expectations, experiences, and beliefs that keep us from living authentically and building the lives and relationships we want.
Grounded and Free brings these ideas together through accessible mental health education, guided reflection, practical exercises, and therapeutic tools that can be used independently, alongside therapy, or within structured clinical and educational settings.
The Grounded and Free Model
The Grounded and Free model approaches growth as more than simply identifying what is wrong or trying to eliminate symptoms. It encourages people to understand how their experiences have shaped them, recognize patterns that may no longer serve them, develop healthier ways of responding, and make intentional choices about what comes next.
Grounded and Free resources combine psychoeducation with opportunities for reflection and application. Readers and participants are not simply given information. They are invited to examine their own experiences, relationships, beliefs, behaviors, strengths, and goals.
The model recognizes that growth is personal, relational, cultural, and developmental. There is no single definition of what a healthy life, family, relationship, recovery, or future must look like.
The goal is not to tell people who they should become.
The goal is to provide tools that help them understand where they have been, become more intentional about where they are, and develop the freedom to decide where they want to go.
The Grounded and Free Collection
The Grounded and Free Collection extends the model into books and workbooks addressing different areas of life, relationships, personal development, and emotional wellness.
Each resource is designed to stand on its own while sharing the broader Grounded and Free philosophy. Depending on the book, readers may encounter educational material, guided reflection, therapeutic exercises, conversation prompts, self-assessments, and opportunities to translate insight into action.
The collection includes resources addressing areas such as relationships, couples, parenting and family life, recovery and sobriety, grief and life transitions, identity, aging, and personal growth.
Grounded and Free books can be used for:

Grounded and Free: A Practical Guide to Sobriety and Building a Life You Can Stay In
Authors: Dr. Latonia Laffitte and Dr. M. Nickleson Battle, Jr.
Sobriety is about more than stopping the use of alcohol or other substances. Lasting recovery also requires understanding why you used, what substances provided for you, what continues to trigger you, and what kind of life you are creating in their place.
This practical guide approaches recovery as the process of building a life that feels stable, meaningful, connected, and worth protecting. Readers explore substance-use patterns, triggers, trauma and self-medication, cravings and urges, emotional regulation, accountability, coping strategies, relationships, boundaries, support systems, identity, purpose, and relapse prevention.
Rather than defining recovery only by what a person has stopped doing, A Practical Guide to Sobriety and Building a Life You Can Stay In asks a more important question: What are you building instead?
For: Individuals in recovery or exploring their relationship with substances, as well as therapists, substance-use counselors, peer recovery professionals, and behavioral health programs.
Additional Books in Development
Grounded and Free: Our Love, Our Way
LGBTQI+ relationships deserve more than relationship advice built around assumptions that were never designed with our relationships in mind.
Our Love, Our Way is an LGBTQI+ couples book that invites partners to intentionally define love, commitment, intimacy, family, roles, and partnership for themselves. Rather than measuring LGBTQI+ relationships against heteronormative expectations, the book creates space for couples to decide what a healthy relationship looks like for them.
The book explores communication, emotional safety, attachment, boundaries, gender and relationship roles, sexuality, desire and intimacy, monogamy, polyamory and relationship agreements, finances, family, spirituality, identity, community, and the ways culture and lived experience influence how we love.
It also recognizes the unique experiences LGBTQI+ couples may bring into relationships, including family acceptance or rejection, minority stress, gender expectations, and the process of creating chosen family and community.
The goal is not to tell couples how their relationship should look. It is to help them build a relationship that is healthy, intentional, mutually respectful, and authentically their own.
For: LGBTQI+ couples, individuals exploring relationship patterns, therapists, couples counselors, and LGBTQI+ affirming relationship programs.
Grounded and Free: Growing Together
Healthy relationships do not happen because two people love each other. They are built through the choices partners continue to make as they change, encounter challenges, repair hurt, and create a life together.
Growing Together is a couples book designed to help partners understand both the relationship they have and the relationship they want to build. It combines accessible relationship education with meaningful conversations, reflection, therapeutic exercises, and interactive tools that couples can use independently or alongside therapy.
The book explores communication, attachment, emotional safety, conflict, trust, intimacy, expectations, boundaries, finances, family influences, individual needs, shared goals, and the patterns that can either strengthen or undermine a partnership.
At its center is a simple reality: you can love someone and still have growing to do. Healthy partnership means creating room for each person to continue becoming who they are while learning how to keep growing together.
For: Couples at any stage of their relationship, premarital couples, couples seeking relationship enrichment, couples in therapy, and clinicians looking for structured therapeutic activities.
Grounded and Free: Parenting Your Parents
There can be a strange and difficult moment in adulthood when the people who once cared for you begin to need you to care for them. The roles may change gradually or seemingly overnight, leaving families trying to navigate decisions they never expected to make.
Parenting Your Parents explores the emotional, practical, relational, cultural, and financial realities of caring for aging parents. It addresses changing family roles, loss of independence, home care versus residential care, medical decisions, finances, dementia and cognitive decline, family conflict, caregiver stress, support systems, estate and end-of-life planning, palliative care, anticipatory grief, death, and grieving the parent you once knew even while they are still present.
The book also addresses the difficult conversations families sometimes avoid: Being someone's child does not automatically make you the person best equipped to become their caregiver. Family enmeshment, guilt, obligation, collectivist cultures, sibling expectations, and cultural traditions can make setting boundaries especially difficult.
Through reflection, therapeutic activities, practical planning tools, and space for preserving memories, readers are encouraged to care for their parents without losing themselves in the process.
For: Adult children of aging parents, family caregivers, siblings navigating shared caregiving responsibilities, therapists, caregiver-support programs, and families preparing for later-life transitions.
Grounded and Free: Growing Old Gaysfully
What does growing older look like when many of the traditional assumptions about aging were never built around your life?
Growing Old Gaysfully is a self-help and therapeutic guide for gay men navigating middle age, later adulthood, and the years ahead. It explores aging not simply as something that happens to us, but as another stage of life that can be approached intentionally.
The book examines health, finances, retirement, dating, romance, sexuality, being single, redefining family, chosen family, friendship, community, estate planning, spirituality, purpose, self-actualization, life reflection, and preparing for the future.
It also considers what happens when someone ages without children or a traditional family structure automatically positioned to provide support.
Importantly, the experience of aging as a gay man is not universal. The book explores how race and ethnicity, socioeconomic status, geography, religion, masculinity, generation, immigration, family acceptance, coming out, HIV/AIDS, community connection, and cultural expectations can profoundly shape the experience of getting older.
Growing Old Gaysfully invites readers to ask not simply, “How do I prepare to get old?” but “What do I want this part of my life to become?”
For: Gay men approaching or experiencing later adulthood, therapists, LGBTQI+ organizations, community groups, aging-service professionals, and those planning intentionally for their future.
Grounded and Free: Raising Them While Growing With Them
There is no rehearsal for parenting. By the time you figure out one stage, your child is already becoming someone new, and so are you.
Raising Them While Growing With Them is a parenting book built around the understanding that parents are not finished products raising unfinished children. Parenting is learned while we are doing it, and every developmental stage gives parents an opportunity to teach, guide, make mistakes, repair, apologize, adjust, and grow.
The book explores child development, attachment, parenting styles, discipline versus consequences, gentle parenting and the need for boundaries, communication, co-parenting, family dynamics, mothers and mother figures, fathers and father figures, the village surrounding a child, cultural differences, spirituality, sex and sexuality, grief and death, and diverse family structures.
It also addresses biracial, adoptive and foster families, same-gender loving parents, and children growing up across cultures.
A central theme is learning to distinguish the child we imagined from the person our child is actually becoming. Parents are encouraged to give themselves grace without abandoning accountability and to recognize that apologizing, changing course, and repairing relationships are not signs of failed parenting. They are part of healthy parenting.
With interactive exercises and therapeutic tools throughout, the book helps parents examine not only how they are raising their children, but who they are becoming while they raise them.
For: Parents, prospective parents, co-parents, guardians, caregivers, family therapists, parenting programs, and anyone trying to raise healthy children while continuing to grow themselves.
Grounded and Free Sobriety
Recovery Is More Than Not Using
Grounded and Free Sobriety is a structured recovery curriculum designed to help participants explore not only substance use, but the experiences, emotions, relationships, behaviors, and patterns surrounding it.
Sobriety may begin with stopping the use of alcohol or other substances, but sustainable recovery often requires something deeper: learning how to live differently.
The curriculum creates space for participants to examine what substances have represented in their lives, identify triggers and patterns, strengthen coping skills, rebuild relationships, establish boundaries, develop support systems, and begin creating a life that does not depend upon substance use to manage it.
Grounded and Free Sobriety approaches recovery without reducing people to a diagnosis, addiction history, relapse, or past behavior. Participants are encouraged to take responsibility for their choices while also developing a deeper understanding of the circumstances, experiences, and needs connected to those choices.
A Structured Therapeutic Curriculum
Grounded and Free Sobriety combines psychoeducation, facilitated discussion, individual reflection, practical exercises, and therapeutic skill development.
Rather than focusing exclusively on abstinence, the curriculum explores the broader work of recovery, including:
Understanding substance use patterns and triggers
Motivation and readiness for change
Emotional regulation and coping
Trauma and adverse experiences
Shame, guilt, and self-perception
Relationships and interpersonal patterns
Boundaries and communication
Family and social systems
Identity and personal values
Relapse prevention and recovery planning
Building healthy support systems
Reconnecting with purpose
Creating a sustainable life in recovery
The curriculum is designed to encourage honest exploration without judgment while maintaining accountability for behavior, choices, and change.
Designed for Real-World Use
Grounded and Free Sobriety is being developed to support structured substance use and behavioral health programming in settings such as outpatient treatment programs, behavioral health organizations, community-based programs, recovery programs, and facilitated therapeutic groups.
The curriculum is intended to provide structure for facilitators while allowing flexibility to respond to the needs, experiences, identities, and circumstances of individual participants.
Grounded and Free Sobriety may also complement individual therapy by providing participants with structured opportunities to continue reflecting and practicing skills outside individual sessions.
For Clinicians and Organizations
The Bridges Wellness Group is developing Grounded and Free as more than a collection of books. The model is intended to provide clinicians, programs, and organizations with practical resources that can be incorporated into behavioral health services, psychoeducation, groups, workshops, and therapeutic programming.
Facilitator resources, structured training materials, and professional learning opportunities are being developed to support appropriate implementation of the Grounded and Free approach.
