Simonica Mendes, Clinical Mental Health Counseling Inter

Simonica Mendes is a dedicated graduate student in the Mental Health Program at Bowie State University. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Journalism with a minor in Sociology from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. With a deep passion for increasing access to mental health services and education for communities of color, particularly immigrant communities, Simonica is committed to making therapy inclusive, empowering, and transformative.

She takes an eclectic approach to therapy, drawing from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Person-Centered Therapy, and Creative Arts Therapy to tailor care to each client’s unique needs. She believes in meeting clients where they are and empowering them to take charge of their own healing. Recognizing that clients are the experts in their own lives, she follows their lead in determining the best path forward. Her warm, nonjudgmental presence fosters a safe space where clients can be vulnerable and embrace their authentic selves.

Understanding that healing can take many forms, she also values the power of humor and laughter in the therapeutic process. She integrates creativity and playfulness into her work, ensuring that therapy is not only effective but also engaging and meaningful.

Outside of her professional work, Simonica enjoys performing improv in Washington D.C., painting, cooking, and exploring new restaurants and locations in the DMV area. Clients working with Simonica can expect a supportive, affirming environment where they feel heard, valued, and empowered to achieve their personal goals.
